Dozens of people took time out of their Tuesday to help protect our shoreline. Keep Lee County Beautiful teamed up with Captiva Erosion Prevention District and Seagram’s Escapes to plant sea oats. This was at Alison Hagerup Beach Park on Captiva. In just over a half hour, staff and volunteers planted 800 sea oats. These plants become a habitat for wildlife like sea turtles and shorebirds, but also help prevent beach erosion, which is critical. “If they don’t protect the erosion, not only would we not have any more beaches which draws our tourists down and drives our economy, all the homes and businesses around here would be in danger,” said Trish Fancher, the executive director of Keep Lee County Beautiful. Seagram’s Escapes funded the project. They hosted a party at Key Lime Bistro on Captiva afterward to thank everyone for their effort.
