A weekend event will feature the eldest granddaughter of author Anne Morrow Lindbergh.

In partnership with the Captiva Chapel by the Sea and Captiva Island Historical Society, the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau will host Kristina Lindbergh for a panel discussion on the impact of her grandmother’s book “Gift from the Sea,” which was published in 1955, on Dec. 5 at 4 p.m.

“‘Gift from the Sea’ is such an important book for Captiva, but really for the whole area,” VCB Communications Director Francesca Donlan said, explaining that the national bestseller speaks to women and even men about finding their voice and their solitude in the midst of a chaotic life.

Lindbergh was inspired to write it during a visit to Captiva.

“That book and those messages are still relevant today,” she said.

Marking its 66th anniversary this year, “Gift from the Sea” has sold over 3 million copies since its publication and has been translated into 45 languages. It remains on many top 10 must-read booklists.

It also changed the literary landscape for women — opening the door for others. Donlan noted that the panel discussion will wrap up a three-day retreat on Captiva for 10 local and national women writers.

At the chapel event, a short documentary about Lindbergh created by the CIHS will be featured, followed by the panel. Kristina Lindbergh will be joined by Capt. Brian Holaway and Ken Sneeden.

“I think that Brian Holaway is a great example of someone who brings ‘Gift from the Sea’ to life,” she said, pointing to his profession. “He’s really, in real-time, living the book and has a history with it.”

Holaway and Sneeden will share their experiences about the book and its history with the island.

“Captiva is really a place of inspiration,” Donlan said.

The event is free and open to the public.

There will be seating available inside and outside of the chapel.

At 5 p.m., refreshments will be served outside underneath the holiday lights.

The public is invited to take part.

“I think we’re all looking for inspiration and it’s going to be this really enchanting evening under these holiday lights, and it’s a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from one of the Lindberghs,” she said.
