15 Best Places to Travel in February 2024

If you’re feeling those mid-winter blahs, a vacation just might be the antidote. Whether you’re looking for a snowy escape, a romantic Valentine’s Day getaway, or a sunny beach vacation, we’ve got you covered. Travelers who don’t mind the cold should consider Europe’s posh ski resorts or a chilly city break. If sunshine is what you’re after, there are balmy beach destinations in the U.S. and Caribbean perfect for couples and families alike. Looking for more excitement this February? There’s always something happening in Las Vegas, and the city’s first Super Bowl is already generating buzz. In Mississippi, February brings Mardi Gras festivities and an opportunity to honor Black History Month at the state’s important sites. 

Here are 15 of the best places to travel in February in the U.S. and around the world.

U.S. Destinations

Kohler, Wisconsin

Destination Kohler, known for its top-rated golf courses, has transformed its Blackwolf Run course to create Frozen Fairways for winter family fun. There’s an ice skating rink on the course, and guests can enjoy fat-tire biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding before warming up with hot chocolate and s’mores by the outdoor fire. Just in time for après-snow pampering, the award-winning Kohler Waters Spa, Wisconsin’s only five-star spa, has completed an extensive refresh. 

Where to Stay: Choose The American Club Resort Hotel, the only five-star, five-diamond hotel in Wisconsin, The Carriage House with direct access to the Kohler Waters Spa, the secluded cabin collection, or the Inn on Woodlake.

Lake Forest, Illinois

Located about half an hour from O’Hare International Airport and 30 miles from downtown Chicago, this city on the shore of Lake Michigan is perfect for a romantic getaway. Browsing the boutiques in historic Market Square, strolling along tree-lined streets, or grabbing a snack at Sweet’s are a few ways to explore Lake Forest. Sure, February in Chicago is cold, but it’s the perfect excuse to cozy up in front of a fireplace with a warming drink. Bundle up and take the Metra from the historic train station to Chicago Union Station to tour some of the Windy City’s indoor attractions, like The Art Institute of Chicago.

Where to Stay: The Deer Path Inn offers English-style charm, afternoon tea, a pub, two restaurants, plush rooms, and an inviting lobby with fireplaces and gorgeous furnishings. During my recent stay, I enjoyed a tasting in the Hidden Wine Cellar and a wonderful cocktail-making session with Master Mixologist Jorge Centeno, the Inn’s “Chief Spirits Officer.”

Las Vegas, Nevada

There’s always something happening in Las Vegas, and with events like November’s Grand Prix and February’s Super Bowl LVIIl, visitors have more reasons to head to the “Neon Capital of the World.” On Feb. 11, Allegiant Stadium will host Nevada’s first Super Bowl. In addition to the events surrounding the game, entertainment seekers will have several top concerts to choose from, including the ongoing residencies from U2, Adele, and Christina Aguilera. 

Where to Stay: Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas just completed the first phase of a major renovation which included the guest rooms and suites, and Caesars Palace recently debuted its redesigned Colosseum Tower. The Durango Casino & Resort just opened off the Strip with over 200 rooms and suites, gaming, and a food hall.

Miami, Florida

If sunshine, beaches, and temperatures in the high 70s aren’t enough to get you to Miami in February, the city’s event lineup should get your attention. See what’s new at the International Boat Show (Feb.14-18), enjoy Art Wynwood (Feb.14-18), or dance to live music at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival (Feb.17-19). The South Beach Wine & Food Festival brings celebrity chefs, dinners, and wine tastings to its oceanfront location from Feb. 22-25. Miami is also perfect for a romantic Valentine’s Day visit — consider booking a sunset cruise on Biscayne Bay or a couples massage at one of Miami’s spas. Be sure to stroll along historic Española Way, revitalized as a pedestrian-only street with restaurants, bars, and shops.

Where to Stay: In the up-and-coming Brickell area, stay at East Miami, conveniently located in the Brickell City Centre shopping mall. I’ve stayed at Esmé on Española Way and Pelican Hotel on lively Ocean Drive and recommend them both as well.

Santa Monica, California 

While you may not want to jump into the Pacific (although you’ll see many wet-suited surfers doing just that), you can enjoy ocean views and stunning sunsets as you stroll along Santa Monica’s waterfront this February. Without summer’s crowds, you’ll have no trouble hopping on the rides at the Santa Monica Pier or scoring reservations at popular restaurants. The weather is ideal for exploring the Santa Monica Mountains where you can go hiking or horseback riding to take in the spectacular vistas. If it gets too chilly, head inside to check out the art galleries at Bergamot Station or learn about California history at the California Heritage Museum, housed in a historic building.

Where to Stay: Oceana Hotel, voted one of the best hotels in Los Angeles by T+L readers, is a suites-only boutique property. Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows is set on five acres overlooking the Pacific (and it’s home to the fabulous Soko Sushi, a personal favorite). 

Maui, Hawaii

Maui is welcoming tourists after the tragic wildfires that devastated the historic town of Lahaina. The loss of lives, homes, and buildings in West Maui is far from forgotten, but many residents depend on tourism for their livelihoods. Here, February weather is mild, and it’s the heart of whale-watching season when humpback whales migrate from Alaska to mate and give birth. Seeing them is a thrill that attracts visitors every year. And for a Valentine's Day trip, what could be more romantic than watching a spectacular Maui sunset together?

Where to Stay: The opulent Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea offers opportunities for guests to support the island’s residents. During my visit, I learned about the resort’s cultural offerings from Aunty Wendy, director of Hawaiian programs. Kā’anapali Beach Resort Association hotels, restaurants, and shops encourage visitors to return to support local communities.

Mississippi

Travelers can honor Black History Month by visiting significant historical sites that are part of  Mississippi’s rich heritage. The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson is a good place to start, as it delves into stories of those who fought against social injustice with photos, timelines, and videos. Feb. 13 brings Mardi Gras, and the state’s early French influences show in its Gulf Coast towns with colorful parades, music, and vibrant costumes. 

Where to Stay: The Bella Downtown is set amid Biloxi’s live music venues.  Enjoy quaint Ocean Springs with a stay at Gulf Hills Hotel & Resort, with a past guest list that includes Elvis Presley and Al Capone.

Port Jervis, New York

This historic small town is an easy getaway about 80 miles northwest of New York City. The year-round Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is nearby, and in summer, there’s whitewater rafting, fishing, swimming, and camping. In winter, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice climbing take over, and downhill skiing is available less than 45 minutes away. “Northeast travelers and city dwellers will love a February trip to Port Jervis to experience the charming small town and winter scenery, with opportunities for cozy fireside dining and outdoor adventures like skiing or hiking on the pine tree-lined paths,” Lisa Karvellas, co-CEO and owner of Cedar Lakes Estate, said in an interview with T+L. 

Where to Stay: Cedar Lakes Estate, set on 500 acres, features cottages and cabins for Winter Weekends that include meals and activities. 

International Destinations

Quebec City, Canada

The 70th Quebec Winter Carnival is set for Jan. 25 to Feb. 11, 2024, with more than 100 activities for family fun, including night parades, snow sculptures, and the new Slide City for downhill excitement. Ice skating, an ice canoe race, laser games, and Bonhomme’s Ice Palace will delight your entire crew, even in frigid temperatures.

Where to Stay: Québec offers many places to stay, but for a unique experience, consider Hôtel de Glace, the only ice hotel in North America. Guests are given sleeping bags, insulating sheets, fireplaces, and hot tubs to stay warm while it’s around 23 degrees Fahrenheit in their rooms.

Loreto, Mexico

Dry weather in the high 70s makes February a great time to visit Loreto, but the main attraction is the arrival of the blue whales during their winter migration. The largest animals on Earth, blue whales migrate each year to feed, mate, and give birth in the warm waters of Loreto Bay National Marine Park. Other whale species, dolphins, sea lions, and marine turtles also make their home in Loreto Bay. Located on the eastern coast of Baja California, Loreto is about six hours north of Los Cabos. The charming town features historic Spanish missions, beaches, restaurants, and an esplanade for seaside strolling. 

Where to Stay: Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto welcomes families with spacious rooms, a kids club, an 18-hole golf course, a spa, five pools, restaurants, and an optional all-inclusive plan. “Loreto is known as a year-round destination, but February is an extra-special time for travelers looking to experience the magic of our incredible underwater wildlife,” Villa del Palmar general manager Miguel Lince told T+L. 

Courchevel, France

“In my opinion, the best ski destination in Europe is Courchevel. It offers the most variety of any ski resort in the world,” according to luxury travel planner and T+L Top Travel Advisor Jonathan Alder. The resort area includes a ski school, trails ranging from beginner to advanced, and many properties with ski-in, ski-out access. Family-friendly features include the new Aquamotion swimming and leisure complex with swimming pools, slides, river rapids, a climbing wall, and a spa. Courchevel is located in the Three Valleys ski area in southeast France; four international airports are about two hours from the resort (in Geneva, Grenoble, Chambery, and Lyon), and guests can also arrive by train with connections from London and Paris.

Where to Stay: Alder’s recommendations are L’Apogee, with a full-service ski valet, ski-in, ski-out access, and five-star service and Aman Le Melezin, a boutique ski lodge that provides the utmost luxury.

Dominican Republic

Located on the island of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic is bordered by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean with nearly 1,000 miles of coastline. Its gorgeous beaches are the main draw for many travelers, but there are other diverse landscapes to explore. Adventure travelers can soar over rainforests, explore deep in ancient caverns, or take river rafting trips. Snorkeling, deep sea diving, and boating to nearby islands are more things to do during your Dominican Republic trip. Francisco Camps, area managing director for Meliá Hotels International Punta Cana, suggests visiting during mid-February’s Carnival. “From the colorful costumes to the joyous celebrations taking over the streets, Carnival is one of the most unique times for travelers to visit and immerse themselves in the DR’s vibrant culture.”

Where to Stay: For a stress-free trip, choose one of the best all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic. Paradisus Palma Real Golf & Spa Resort in Punta Cana, an elegant beachfront resort, recently unveiled a $40 million renovation. The family-friendly resort also offers The Reserve, a separate adults-only section. 

The Bahamas

Family vacations, romantic getaways, and diving trips are all reasons to head to the beautiful islands of the Bahamas. The swimming pigs of the Exumas are a visitor favorite, and travelers can find secluded beaches and uninhabited cays during boating excursions. The islands are paradise for divers, with coral reefs, caves, blue holes, and shipwrecks to explore. And no visit is complete without trying local Bahamian specialties like conch fritters, Johnny cakes, and fresh seafood. With several international airports on the islands, visitors have lots of ways to get here. 

Where to Stay: Atlantis Paradise Island features five hotels in one resort, an array of restaurants and bars, a water park, golf, a marina, and more. The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort on Paradise Island offers upscale guest rooms, bungalows, and large villa residences, perfect for families or groups.

South Australia

With wildlife encounters, rugged Outback, and amazing wine, South Australia has a ton to offer visitors. Adelaide, the capital city, offers entertainment, dining, and Adelaide Fringe, a month of art and culture beginning on Feb. 16, 2024. Known for outstanding wines, the Barossa wine region is less than an hour from Adelaide. Kangaroo Island, a ferry ride away from the mainland, boasts rugged beauty, wildlife, and (of course!) kangaroos. Plus, February is summer in South Australia, so you can expect warm weather. 

Where to Stay: Two years after it was razed in the island’s bushfires, the luxurious Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island just reopened this month. The Louise, set among the vineyards of the Barossa Valley, offers 15 private villa-style suites.

Dolomites, Italy

Located in northeastern Italy, the Dolomites are beautiful in summer — and even better during the winter. During the snowy months, the mountains — a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site — attract skiers and snowboarders from around the world. One of the many valley towns, Cortina d’Ampezzo, will host the 2026 Winter Olympics. The ski season runs from about December until March, so February is ideal if you want to hit the slopes. About a three-hour drive from the international airport in Venice, the Dolomites border Austria, which is apparent in the language and cuisine.

Where to Stay: Hotels, resorts, home rentals, and condos are available. Alpin Garden in Ortisei is a charming inn with a spa and daily guided ski experiences. La Perla in Corvara offers a variety of rooms and a Michelin-starred restaurant.
