The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel
The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel
As we are half-way through the year, it's safe to say 2020 has not gone the way any of us could imagine. The past months have been challenging for all of us; particularly those of us involved in travel and tourism. We have watched helplessly as meetings have been canceled, postponed and then re-imagined.

Adapting to this ever-changing landscape has been our priority. As a result, I present to you Shellcast, the podcast designed to bring The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel right to you and inspire ideas for your next meeting. Listen, relax, soak up some virtual sun and learn what makes Southwest Florida so special. Subscribe to Shellcast wherever fine podcasts are downloaded, and encourage your attendees to do the same. Did I mention it’s free?

RSW Covid-19 Response

Opening in September 2020, the waterfront Luminary Hotel & Co. will soar 12 stories above downtown Fort Myers as the area's first hotel in the prestigious Autograph Collection of Marriott International. Luminary will house 8,000 square feet of adaptable indoor and outdoor function space ideal for a variety of events and meetings. The hotel is directly adjacent to the neighboring Caloosa Sound Convention Center, currently being renovated for a 2020 grand opening. When complete, the facility will offer 40,000 square feet of function space.

Before the pandemic, the Westin Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village was slated to complete its renovation in December 2021. The resort shifted gears during its Covid-19 shutdown and began renovating on May 1, 2020. The anticipated completion date is the end of 2020 - a full year ahead of schedule. The $15 million renovation includes increasing room inventory and a new design inspired by the concept of biophilia, "a belief that people have an innate need to connect with nature", as Michael Tighe, general manager described.

At The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel, we are committed to showcasing our community's cultural diversity. True shifts of change take time and to progress forward we need to continuously learn from each other, grow, change and adapt. Below are two suggestions for added inclusion and diversity during your next meeting:

  • Our region's black chefs and cooks are turning out delicious dishes that are as wide-ranging as they are flavorful. Among the restaurants and food trucks run by black proprietors, you'll find soul-food, vegan dishes, Haitian classics, and zesty Jamaican food. Take a look at 10 local black-owned restaurants offering a wealth of diverse, delicious fare.

  • Walk Dunbar's cultural landmarks. This fun and engaging tour, narrated via an app, contains ten stops of cultural significance in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard redevelopment area. Contact the Lee County Black History Museum for more information, or view and listen to the tour now at this link.

Sometimes all you need is a little laughter. Brighten your day with a Fort Myers and Sanibel meme. Spread the joy with your meeting attendees by sharing on social media. Be sure to use #FortMyersSanibel so we can follow along!

Hands up if you like Tuesdays!
