Bonita Springs & Estero

South of Fort Myers, the communities of Estero and Bonita Springs are small-town at heart, but they’re also popular commercial areas and recreational playgrounds. South of Fort Myers, the communities of Estero and Bonita Springs are small-town at heart, but they’re also popular commercial areas and recreational playgrounds. Estero’s history runs deep – back to the 19th century, in fact, when early settlers attempted to create a utopian community at what is now Koreshan State Park. From the state park, you can paddle even further back in time to what is now Mound Key Archaeological State Park, an ancient Calusa site.

Shoppers can score great deals and enjoy some sunshine at two expansive outdoor malls in Estero – Miromar Outlets and Coconut Point Mall. Downtown Bonita Springs mixes history and modern times by repurposing its historic buildings as places for great food, craft cocktails and microbrews. Sample delicious crepes at the Survey Cafe, an old Florida cottage under live oaks, or plan a special evening out at Angelina’s Ristorante, where fine Italian cuisine, live piano music and a 30-foot wine tower make for a memorable night.

For a day of pampering, book a massage and other rejuvenating treatments at Shangri-La Springs, then dine at Harvest & Wisdom, the spa’s onsite farm-to-table restaurant. Riverside Park is a nice community park with a bandshell where you can often catch an outdoor concert or festival. Nearby, you’ll be fascinated by the beautiful flora and fauna at the Wonder Gardens, as other visitors have been since the attraction opened in 1936. For some beach time, Bonita Beach Park is a popular gathering spot for shell-seekers and families, or plan a day at Dog Beach, where your pup can play off-leash.
